The Hardest Time of Year

By, Joaquin Martinez

Contrary to popular belief, the winter season is not the hardest time of year for people to stay consistent with their fitness routine.

Can you guess what time of year is the hardest for people to exercise in?

Yup….its the summer!

The reason the summer months are the hardest is because unlike the quick 6 weeks of the holiday season (thanksgiving to new years), the summer spans 3 months.

The first roadblock for people in the summer is memorial day. This is when everybody start to think about leaving on vacation. School is out, the weather is better, and their health & fitness take a backseat to their other priorities. Also, the list of graduations bogs them down to where they fumble on scheduling in their workouts.

Next up is the 4th of July, and the massive amounts of hot dogs they will consume.

The extreme heat doesn’t help either. They are not drinking enough water and thus lose tons of energy from essentially evaporating (not having adequate water in their body.

After independence day, vacations, the dog-days of summer, and the longer days makes the summer a drag for most people because its extremely hot and monotonous.

Then the kids start to go back to school in mid august, and parents have a hard time transitioning anyways, so there goes their routine.

And lastly, Labor day. This is the end of the summer season, and its capped off by more BBQs, and more unhealthy eating/drinking, and less exercise.

This all took 3 months, from Memorial day to Labor day. So in my opinion, the summer season wrecks the most havoc on peoples workout routine. Unless your workouts are such a strong habit already, you may not make it through without pausing or canceling your exercise routine.

The best time to start a workout routine is right before the summer. The reason is, you throw yourself right into the hardest time of year, and if you can make it through that then you can make it through the winter season, because it will seem like a mini-summer season. You will be better equipped with handing the adversity.

You will therefore be more likely to succeed through the first 3 months of the year, when everyone makes & breaks their new years resolutions again. Think about how much stronger you will be this time around. And then when summer comes around again, you will look forward to keeping your results and tight body. You will actually look forward to the hotel gym or look to make plans to find the nearest gym in town. That’s when you know you have it dialed in!
